In the same way that Cosmetic Dentistry changed public perception about crooked and ugly aging teeth, a maturing field of advanced medical products is beginning to change the perception that an aging face should look less healthy or vibrant than a younger face. He took it upon himself to complete advanced training in both medical and dental based facial cosmetics courses to provide him with the best treatment options for his patients in both disciplines.
Is it safe for my dentist to administer cosmetic facial fillers and Injectables?
Facial cosmetics is a natural progression for dentists who perform cosmetic dentistry procedures.. Dentists can numb patients better than most physicians and give more injections than anyone else. The State on New Jersey is very progressive and fully understands the excellent capabilities of properly trained dentists in providing these services to their patient as an adjunct to dental cosmetics.
BOTOX® is a non surgical treatment that has been FDA approved since 2002 for treatment of frown lines 
between the eyes and above the nose, called glabellar lines. However, most plastic surgeons, dermatologists and trained dentists who use BOTOX® in cosmetic treatments utilize it for a variety of facial lines and wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, marionette lines, smile lines, smoker's lines, etc.
Juvéderm™,is a type of injectable filler that was given FDA approval for usage in 2006. Juvéderm™ is typically used by dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and select cosmetic dentists who have the proper credentials and training. Juvéderm™ works by suppressing the deep folds and wrinkled lines in the face by injecting hyaluronic acid (the active ingredient in Juvéderm™) into the area to be treated. Hyaluronic acid is a substance produced by the bodiesof all mammals, usually concentrated in the skin, muscles, tendons and joints - and acts as a lubricant and protectant. Juvéderm’s™ primary usage is to erase nasolabial folds, or “smile lines,” which typically appear from the bottom of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Juvéderm™ can also be used in lip augmentation, or to fill in voids and visible scars on the face. It is important to understand, however, that Juvéderm™ filler injections are not a permanent solution, as your body will eventually absorb the hyaluronic acid, creating the need for additional injections to maintain your fresh, youthful look about once every 12 months. Juvéderm™ replenishes your face with a smooth, natural look and feel that everyone will take notice of, but nobody will associate.
Restylane®
Restylane® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds. Trained dentists and physicians experienced in the use of dermal fillers and who use Restylane® may use it in a variety of facial cosmetic procedures. For instance, some physicians use it to augment cheeks, to enhance and add fullness to the lips, and to help lift the eyelids.
Restylane® is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found in the body that provides the skin with volume and hydration. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is called non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) because it is not derived from animal sources. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts and binds to water. This characteristic allows Restylane® longer lasting and more easily sustained results.
More than 4 million people in over 70 countries have been treated with Restylane®. In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Restylane® for the correction of nasolabial folds.
Restylane® results generally last 6 to 9 months, or longer. An individual’s skin properties, the facial area treated and the physician’s depth of experience can all affect the longevity of Restylane®. Added longevity may be achieved by returning to your physician for touch up while some filler is still present in the body, since the body continues to respond with it’s own collagen production in the area where Restylane® is placed. The amount of product required to maintain results may decrease in subsequent procedures as well. Depending upon the exact nature of the procedure, physicians may choose to supplement Restylane® treatment by placing a botulinum toxin in the muscles around the treated area to enhance results and extend the life of the product.
Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body, there is a low occurrence of adverse effects due to Restylane® injection. The most commonly reported side effects are temporary redness, swelling and bruising around the injection site, generally lasting a few days.
Perlane®
Perlane®, like Restylane®, is a hyaluronic acid used for the treatment of age related depressions of the face, such as nasolabial folds. The defining characteristic of Perlane® is its larger gel particles of hyaluronic acid, which makes it more suitable for deeper layers of the dermis and gives it a higher restructuring capability. Consequently, Perlane® may be used in patients presenting more deeply defined facial lines and creases.
Perlane® treatments last from 6 to 9 months, or longer, with variants including an individual’s unique skin properties and metabolism, the amount of muscular activity in the area of placement, as well as the skill and technique of the practicing physician. Added longevity may be achieved by returning to your physician for a touch up while some filler is still present in the body.
Radiesse® is used by physicians to correct wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds. It is also used for marionette and smile lines. In addition to treatment of wrinkles, Radiesse® is used widely by physicians and trained dentists to help contour and shape facial features.For instance, Radiesse® can be an effective treatment option for sunken areas below the eyes (tear trough), and to augment cheeks,as well as fill in the areas on the sides of the chin (pre-jowl sulcus). Radiesse® can shape cheeks, chin and jawlines similar to what facial implantswill do, but has the added benefit of being completely customizable.
Radiesse® is commonly used in areas of the face in which wrinkles are more pronounced and the skin is thicker. Radiesse® generally lasts up to a year, or more. During the first year, some physicians may advise patients to return for touch up treatments to optimize the collagen-regeneration attributes of Radiesse®.
